Hi. I’m John.
I am a writer, musician, and educator based in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.
For two decades I’ve taught creative nonfiction, narrative journalism, creative nonfiction, and podcasting at the University of Toronto Mississauga.
I also teach climate communication, having begun my career working in international development. A grant I received from the Canadian government sent me to East Africa for five months to document rural agriculture, health, and peacebuilding programs. I also raised funds for tree-planting at outdoor concerts across Canada put on by The Tragically Hip. Gord Downie, the band’s singer, contributed and as two word nerds would, after the Another Roadside Attraction Tour ended, we exchanged handwritten letters.

I have edited and published three books. Each became peer model texts in my classes: collections written by students for students. This approach not only gives voice to a cohort whose lived experience and opinions are often marginalized within the academy but shows by example what students can do, given proper editing support and a positive pedagogy.
